About the Department

The Department of Mathematics as started in the year 1980-81 with the sanctioned strength of students 25 in each English Medium and Tamil Medium. Applications from students seeking admission for U.G Mathematics are increasing every year. We are admitting additional 30% strength with the permission of the university every year. In this year, 453 students are doing UG, 66 students are doing P.G. and 32 students doing their Ph.D Programmes.

The International genius in Mathematics, Sir Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in Thanjavur District. The Students of Mathematics have been getting Distinctions and there are many Rank Holders for the past many years. The Department consists of very well qualified faculty members with M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. They have also acquired specialized knowledge in computers. A good number of faculty members in the Department are interested in updating their Knowledge and they enthusiastically participate in seminars and conferences and publish their papers in reputed National and International journals. The Mathematics department conducted the UGC sponsored National Conference on "Development in Mathematical Applications" in the year 2005 and also conducted UGC Sponsored "National Conference on Advances in Mathematics: Scientific Development and Engineering Applications" in the year 2009.
The Research Advisors of the department perform research activities in the following areas: Mathematical Modeling, Stochastic Processes, Fuzzy Mathematics, Operations Research. TANSCHE sponsored State Level Conference conducted in the year 2015 , a State Level Webinar conducted on “ The Innovation Process and Challenges of Fuzzy Modelling” on 04.06.2020 and a National Level Workshop conducted on “ Role of Mathematics and Statistics in TNPSC Examinations” on 20.12.2021.  The International conference on “Recent Trends in Mathematical Science and Technology (RTMST 2024)” is organized by the Department of Mathematics, Kunthavai Naacchiyaar Government Arts College for Women (Autonomous) on 1st March 2024.

Vision:    To empower women to emerge as trailblazers in the real of mathematics, nurturing a climate of innovation, creativity and scholarly distinction
Mission:   To deliver an exhaustive and exacting mathematical curriculum that empowers students with the capabilities, understanding and assurance to thrive across various vocational and academic avenues.  By means of exploration, cooperation and civic involvement the department endeavors to propel the boundaries of mathematical understanding while championing equality and multiplicity within the mathematical sphere.

Objectives and goals

  • The goals and objectives of a mathematics department typically include fostering  a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, promoting critical thinking skills, preparing students for further education are careers in mathematics related fields.
  • Additionally, department may aim to enhance mathematical literacy and appreciation among students and the broader community.
  • To promote Research and Development activities and kindle creative thinking of the students and encourage their innovative ideas and projects.
  • To develop knowledgeable and responsible citizens for participating in nation building activities.
  • To motivate students to take part competitive exam and to enhance their placement.
  • To circulate entrepreneurial employability skills and team spirit.
  • To create an awareness of the impact of mathematics on the environment, society and development outside of the scientific community.

Key initiatives and projects

  • Prediction of solid waste disposal by using multi decision making method.

This project is financially sponsored by Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, Chennai.
To effectively allocate the inventories and cost of waste with in particular place in order to maximize the revenues generated by the facilities from the treatment of work. Also, this work is allocating the flow of waste under the restrictions of transportion, inventory holding, waste treatment and disposal operation.

  • Mathematical modeling to predict solid waste disposal.

This project is financially sponsored by TamilNadu State Council for Science and Student Project Proposal.
Waste management problems consist of technology different uncertain parameters while considering the real life situation. They may be considered as waste generation rates, availability of workers at treatment facilities, inventory capacities of different units etc. treatment facility centres utilize the usable components of waste in manufacturing different products of waste in manufacturing different products and thus serves as an excellent alternative to disposal centres. Although the non-usable components of waste as well as residuals generated on treatment need to be dumped into land fills. Treatment of waste at treatment centres requires certain amount of time for the treatment of waste. Future research should focus to manage fully proper disposal of solid waste in environment.
