ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Physics was started as an undergraduate course with 40 students in the year 1979 – 1980. Second shift system (SSS) was introduced in 2007 – 2008 with 80 students. Later, it was recognized as a research department in 2011 – 2012.
Department is provided with Allied Physics for Chemistry and Mathematics students and Applied Physics for Computer Science students.
In the year 2018, M. Sc Physics was started with well equipped lab.
The department has always been unique among the other colleges for nurturing skills along the academics through science Quiz and exhibition.
The Department has well equipped with 4 labs for Major and Allied courses and for research programmes with excellent teaching staffs and lab assistants.
Student friendly environment for the undergraduates to work individually as well as part of groups in laboratory.

VISION

The Vision of the Department of Physics is to provide in depth understanding of, the principles and concept of Physics and to acquire proficiency, both in theoretical and experimental Physics. The Department aims to enhance the student’s knowledge in basics as well as in Physics. To inculcate aptitude for a research career in academic or in industry, by introducing advanced ideas and techniques that are applicable.

MISSION

To import quality education in Physics such that, they aim to attain better position in the best Organizations. To make the students effectively disseminate their knowledge to the next coming generation. To develop the capacity and know-how to apply the principles and laws of Physics to solve problems. Enhance their ability to do and interpret the data obtained in experiments. To extend research facilities and thereby approaching towards the centre for excellence. To apply the knowledge of Physics for sustainable development of the society. Assume responsibility and always practice ethical principles, to function effectively, as individual as well as in a team.

GOALS

  • To provide the student with a broad understanding of the physical principles of the universe, to help them to develop critical thinking, to empower them to think creatively about scientific problems and experiments.
  • Graduates from our program will be skilled in the methods of scientific research and investigation.
  • Students will use principles, laws, and basic concepts to solve the problems.
  • Demonstrate appropriate uses of mathematics and computer skills to learn physical concepts and applications.

OBJECTIVES

  • Knowledge and ability to use various problem solving strategies.
  • Ability to justify and explain specific approaches to solving problems.
  • Apply the knowledge of core concepts of Physics, in the NET, SET, GATE, MOOC  National level examinations and are able to communicate and present the project work/research work through conferences, seminars etc….

KEY INITIATIVES AND PROJECTS

  • Discovering and clarifying the basic laws that form natural world.
  • Preparing physicists for future industrial needs and information technology.
  • To conduct project to deepening knowledge and understanding of broad view in various field of physics.

RESOURCE AND FACILITIES

  • There are 2166 books are available in the Department library. Students can take any book from the library for them reference and can keep with them for 20 days. Any number of books can be taken by a student.
  • Eight computer systems with latest configuration are available in the Department. Also canon scanner printer is available.
  • Fully equipped four labs are accessible for students for doing experiments.
  • Research equipments like spray pyrolysis unit (Conventional, simplified and nebulizer), constant temperature bath for SILAR, magnetic stirrer, ultrasonic cleaner, K – Roy physical balance, Hall effect apparatus, Four probe equipment and high range resistance meter are used by M. Sc physics students to carry out their projects.
  • Apart from research facilities, e/m apparatus Laser grating, AFO with digital display, CRO, Integrated chip tester, Stepper motor, Microcontroller are used for UG and PG experiments.
  • Seven fully furnished and highly ventilated class rooms with glassy boards makes teaching environment better.

FUTURE PLAN AND OPPORTUNITIES

  • To enrich physics laboratories by purchasing research quality equipments.
  • Publish research articles in peer reviewed journals periodically and organize the national conferences and workshops.
  • Support the development of future leaders in physics, or other chosen career paths of our students through the continued development of excellence in graduate education.

OPPORTUNITIES

There are ample numbers of organizations that offer excellent job roles for such graduates, include BARC, BHEL, ONGC, NTPC, ISRO.
The scope of physics is beyond our imagination. There are enormous fields, some of the major employment areas for graduates are as under:

  • Research and Development
  • Museums and Planetariums
  • Space and Astronomy
  • Robotics
  • Renewable or Non- Renewable energy sector
  • Nanotechnology
  • Defence services
  • Geophysics and Meterology
  • Radiation Protection centres
  • Artificial Intelligence

BEST PRACTICES

  • Title: Tutoring slow learners: Early screening Title of Practice and identification of slow learners based on their academic performance in first assessment. To motivate them during teaching and monitoring periodically.
  • The context : Slow learners do not have grasping capacity and they need more time for learning and they need more support and encouragement from teachers to be successful. They have lot of pressure from their parent side also. Their low intellectual abilities and environmental factors make them as slow learners.
  • The Practice: ICT Enhanced Learning Experience:  Improved attentiveness and engagement, increased knowledge retention, interactive and fun learning environment, quick understanding, easy tracking of response, enriched overall learning experience.

PERFORMANCE AND IMPACT

  • Impact can be achieved through performances as long as we very well understand how things are connected to make a whole.
  • While some students excel in their academic performance, a large chunk of others perform dismally which leads to lengthened period spend at institutions.
  • Few studies have been conducted on Physics.
  • The key findings revealed that attending tutorials, use of previous examination papers, self – given homework, student – run study groups and use of the library are factors that were helpful in improving academic performance of students.
  • Academic performance is essential for the successful development of young students in colleges.
  • Evidence suggests that teachers have a significant influence on student’s awareness and understanding of their academic performance, as well as their desire to achieve success.
