About  the Department

The Department of Botany, is one of the pioneer departments of our college, was established in 1972-1973 with undergraduate course in Botany. It has been providing quality education and guidance in the field for the past seven decades. From the academic year 2004-2005 onwards, the Department got upgraded as a Post Graduate Department, offering M.Sc., degree in Botany. Department offers B.Sc., Botany in both Tamil and English medium with a sanctioned strength of 40 each and M.Sc., Botany with the strength of 25.
              
Understand the value of research in the different branches of Botany, M.Phil., course was started from 2005. Under the same spirit, a Ph.D. program was begun in 2006–2007 as a part-time program, and it became a full-time program starting in 2012–2013. Presently, the Department is a full-fledged research Department, with well experienced regular faculty members; running research in the thrust areas of Botany, like Phytochemistry, Agricultural Microbiology, Pharmacognosy Molecular Biology, Bio-informatics and Mycology. The Department encourages the students for higher learning by inculcating research culture. So far, 69 M. Phil., and 20 Ph. D., Degrees have been awarded. Our students are well placed in various reputed Government and Non-Government organization. About 200 Research papers were published by both the faculty members and scholars in various reputed journals. The Department, to its credit, has completed 1 Major and 1 Minor projects funded by UGC and TANSCHE and organized International Seminar, Workshops and Outreach Hands on Training Programme for Self help groups.

Our mission is to foster an environment of excellence by attracting and supporting the outstanding students, faculty and staff needed to sustain our vision.

The aim of the department is to foster high quality, innovative and multidisciplinary research in the field of Botany and to provide a platform for the development of entrepreneurs.

  • Consultancy services are carried out for PCR instrumental work.
  • Authentification of plants required by in and around colleges.
  • To maintain the Herbarium centre and Germ plasm to create awareness on conservation.

Performance and Impact

The department of Botany maintain a Botanical Garden of around 4500 sq.ft., where a vast variety of plants with aquatic, terrestrial and desert plants. A compost pit is also present in our Botanical Garden. We have established a herbarium centre for plant Identification and Authentication. Rare plants are conserved in the form of Germplasm maintenance for future use.

Resources and Facilities

The lab is fully furnished with instruments for biological work, including PCR, UV Spectrophotometer with Microcontroller based, Laminar Airflow Chamber, an Electrophoresis apparatus, cooling centrifuge, Deep Freezer, and UV Transilluminator etc.,

Future plans and Opportunities

 Future plans

  • To develop organic farming.
  • Hands on training programe will be conducted for herbal product preparation, Biofertilizer Production and mushroom cultivation.
