Rice Bowl of Tamilnadu-Thanjavur gave birth to their women’s in the year 1966. Department of Zoology dawned in the year 1979-1980 with the natural scent of dual media concomitantly with 20 students each. As awareness of studying Zoology increases, we are admitting an additional 30% strength with the permission of Bharathidasan University every year.
Post-graduation in Zoology bloomed in the academic year 2004-2005 with sparkling of 25 stakeholders. The department was upgraded as Research department offers full time and Part time Research leading to doctoral degree in 2011-2012 onwards. The demand ratio for the Course was increased and the number of applications nearly doubled during the period of 2021-2022. The faculty members of the department unanimously agreed to increase the number of sanctioned strength of the B.Sc course. The laboratory courses are designed to have hands on training in handling the animals and to acquire adequate knowledge in the advanced technologies in the areas of Vermicomposting, Animal farming, food production, Beekeeping, Sericulture, Food Processing, Food preservation, Value addition.
The curriculum for Ph.D Programme is being designed according to the realtime problems identified from the public and to address their need.
The curriculum is reviewed every 3yrs in order to incorporate the developments taking place in the science and Technology in the society. The usage of live models ICT tools apply the knowledge gained by Research and skill of problem solving methodologies in the field of vital statistics.

Key initiatives:

The UGC minor projects related to Aquaculture and vector control completed successfully. Student mini project related to Ecology, Aquaculture and Bioremediation were completed. The students are encouraged to visit zoologically important places for the field visit as part of their curriculum.

Collaboration

MOU was signed between Saveetha Dental college hospital Chennai and Sara fish farm Manargudi to motivate the students to gain knowledge about the hands-on training, handling of microbial cultures and Aquaculture techniques.

Resources and infrastructure:

All faculty members of the department are efficient, Potential, Intellectual dynamic and magnificient. Well equipped laboratories with sofesticated instrument such as UV-Vis computing Spectrophotometer, Gel documentation, Thermal cycler, Cooling centrifuge, Deep freezer etc. The Department also possess ICT enabled smart classroom and student mentor system.

Future Plans and Directions:

Plan to sign Mou with central and State Universities, TANVAS, NIFTEM Higher education institutions. Hands on training/ internship as compulsory course. Encouraging the students to achieve SWAYAM NPTL Examination and add on courses. Encouraging the students to persue higher Education and Research programmes. Establishment of museum as unique component. Enriching the curriculum to compete the State and National level Examinations. Organize international conference/ Scientist meet.
