ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Economics was started in the Academic Year 1974-75 with Undergraduate Course (B.A. Economics) then in the year 1997-98 post graduate course (M.A. Economics) and it was elevated as Research Department in the year 2004 - 2005. The various Programmes offered by the department are aimed at to develop the student’s personality and employability skill. The Department Organized field visits for the students to aware social issues and empower the girl students through well- built curriculum. 2024 is the golden Jubilee year for the department and it is aimed to celebrate this event by various activities by the students and staff.
VISION
The vision of the Department of Economics is to study current economic issues and to do research on various economic and social issues.Then to provide quality education to the students and empower them onPolicy formulation and inculcate the issues in Indian Economy. The department thrives on achieving excellence in teaching on socioeconomic issues. The Department of Economics recognizes the increasing need for trained manpower in all round development of our state and our country.
MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT
- To impart theoretical and applied knowledge of Economics to the students.
- To create awareness on current economic affairs.
- To undertake socio-economic research for regional development.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
- The objective of the department is to prepare students to acquire applied knowledge of economics to enhance their employability
- To inculcate theoretical and applied knowledge of economics with a view to helping the students to pursue a career in economics and higher education.
- To enable the students for acquiring the skill of employability and entrepreneurship.
- To provide a pathway to a diverse set of career opportunities, including Economists, jobs in Banks, Multinational Companies, Manufacturing Firms, Statistical Departments etc.
- To create an amicable environment,to develop analytical skills, integrity, human value and environmental awareness.
- To disseminate knowledge for conducting quality research on socio-economic problems.
- Students are taught to take steps to improve the rural economy and become self-sufficient by engaging in agriculture and allied activities.
KEY INITIATIVES OR PROJECTS:
Applied for ICSSR Major Research Project in the Year 2019 and short listed by the expert committee for the interaction meeting on September 27th 2019 at ICSSR New Delhi.
PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS
MOU has been signed with A Division of CADD CENTRE, Thanjavur.
RESOURCES AND FACILITIES:
Although the college has a central library, the Department of Economics has its own library. The departmental library has about 2536 books, including text and reference books. Both teachers and students use the library.Smart class room with ICT facility is used for departmental activities and lectures.
PERFORMENCE AND IMPACT :
Students satisfaction Survey (SSS) is Conducted every year as a key performance indicator in the Department of Economics. The Data were analysed and the students suggestions are taken for action.
FUTURE PLANSAND OPPORTUNITIES
It is proposed to do the following activities as future plants in the Department of Economics
- MoU will be signed with different institutions for the improvement of Employability Skills and Learning opportunities to the students.
- In service training will be given to the students through various organizations. Such as DIC, NIFTEM, etc,.
- Special Lectures on various economics Topic and Research Methodology Workshop will be arranged for the betterment of the students.
BEST PRACTICE:
In the department of Economics, the students were encouraged to take seminars in various tittles to enrich their knowledge as well as to equip themselves to speak before a gathering.
The practice of students interacting among themselves has been inculcated in the classroom. By undergoing such healthy discussions, language, and personality skills are improved among the students.
Training is imparted to handle the computer for their future betterment through CLP classes
Every year Economic Association Meetings were conducted and special lectures on current Economic affairs by other College and University Professors were arranged to update the student knowledge.
The practice of downloading and reading books through the online portal has been introduced among the students. Reading and hearing through the internet and watching videos are being improved among the students.
Audio-recorded lessons were provided for the visually challenged students and that too prepared by their fellow friends.
Twice in a month, the grievances of the students are received and redressed by the teachers in charge of the concerned committee. The teachers in charge provide guidelines to prevent girls from facing any psychological issues relating to affect their peace of mind.
The teachers in charge and all the teachers help those students who are unable to pay their examination fees, especially the students who come from very poor financial backgrounds. The teachers’ pay special attention to the poor and hungry students and arrangements for food were made for the needy ones.
Books are introduced for those students who are preparing for the competitive examinations. Students were free enough to equip themselves to improve and develop their artistic values.
Students were encouraged to participate in various cultural activities conducted by the college authorities and encourage them to write article in the college magazine.
The students are participating in the inter collegiate Programme and also participate in workshops and seminars conducted by various other colleges.
Every year students along with staff went to the book exhibition conducted by Govt. of Tamilnadu in Thanjavur.
To create awareness about the environment, instruction was given to each of the students to plant a plant or a tree in their homes. if there is no space in their residing area, the practice of growing at least a potted plant has been inculcated in the students.
