About the Department

The Department of History was established in 1969 with the introduction of the UG program. The PG program was introduced in 1976, and the department was upgraded to a research department in 2011. Our focus is on Regional, National, and International History, equipping students to face competitive examinations. We emphasize field and skill-oriented courses, specializing in regional studies, particularly in the history of Thanjavur, Temple Architecture, Epigraphy, Archaeology, and Tourism.

TANSCHE SPONSERED:

            One day National Seminar on “Recent Trends in Archaeology and its impact on the Society”.      Organized by PG and Research Department of History Kunthavai Naacchiyaar Govt. Arts College for Women (A) Thanjavur, held on 11.03.2020. In this conference more than 150 participants were participated.
          One day International conference on the focal time of “Unsung freedom fighters of Tamilnadu” was held on 22nd September 2022. Around 112 participants from all over India participated and then articles was printed and published.


Summary of the Conference:


One Day International Conference on “Origin of Gender Inequality and its Social Implications: A History Approach was organized by Post Graduate History and Research Department on 21.7.23 at Kundavai Nachiyar Government College of Arts for Women (Autonomous), Thanjavur. The Main theme of this conference is to create awareness among women and how to overcome from the Gender inequality society. Objective of gender inequality is to analyze and explore the impact of gender in justice, inequality, bias and discrimination towards the female gender and the outcome of the same in the form of social evils and crimes against them. Organizing Secretary Dr. A. Karkuzhali, Head of History Department gave the welcome address. Dr. G. Poonkodi ,Asst professor of History brief about the conference, Our College Principal Dr. A. John Peter delivered the presidential address. Dr. V. Ravichandran, Associate Professor, Department of History, Poondi Pushpam College (Autonomous) delivered an inaugural address. D. Malarvizhi, controller of the examination, Dr. N. Seethalakshmi Associate Professor of History, Thanthai Periyar Govt Arts and science college, Trichy and  Dr. K. Banu Kumar IQAC co-ordinator gave a felicitation address. Dr. Salomon Selvam, Professor of Sociology at Clabbin University in South Carolina, USA, delivered a keynote address and presented a paper on the topic of a historical approach to the origin of gender inequality and its social impact. Dr. R. Govindaraj Associate Professor, Department of History, Raja Serfoji Arts & Science College (Autonomous), Thanjavur delivered a valedictory address. Dr.S.Shanthi, Associate professor of History gave vote of thanks. Dr. B. Meenakshi, Assistant professor of History hosted the events. Heads from various departments and staff participated in the event. Students from various college participated. Certificates were awarded to all participants.

One day State Level seminar on “FROM SINDHU TO PORUNAI” conducted by Department of History on 05.03.2024, with the participation of 200 academicians and students.

COLLABORATIONS AND PARTNERSHIP:

  • Department of History in Collaboration with Dubai Tamil Sangam Conducted a Multi Disciplinary International conference on the Role of Higher Education Global Development during 28th November 2019.
  • Free Coaching class & Skill Development Training conducted for SC & ST students by THADCO – Collaborating with Varanda Race during 15.02.2023 to 05.05.2023.
  • The Department of History conducted International Conference on the Title of “Exploring the History of Chola Region” on  Two hundred students and faculties participate.
  • The Department of Tamil & History jointly organized Special Lecture on 10.01.2024 under the Title of “Cholas Art and Architecture” Eminent Resource Persons participated and attended by hundreds of students and faculties.
  • Department of History in Collaboration with Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology conducted a Seminar on “Elimination of Violence Against Women” on 02.03.2024. Interested students of various department participated in this seminar.
  • The Department has signed three MoUs with Tamil University Thanjavur and Department of Maritime History and Marine Archaeology and the Department of History and Sculpture and the Department of Epigraphy and Archaeology.

  • Inviting eminent historians, scholars of National and International repute.
  • Value Added courses are taught for imparting employability skills.
  • The Department conduct & regularly International conferences and workshops.

RESOURCES AND INFRASTRUCTURE:

  • 100% of the Faculty Members possess hold Ph.D., qualification.
  • Department has good library which caters the need of the students and researchers.
  • The Department Library is serving as a rich resource centre, consisting  3881 books comprised of Reference books, rare volumes of ARE (Annual Report on Epigraphy), and other primary documents.
  • The Department is enabled with the Over Head Projector and Multimedia LCD projector facility.
  • Most of the staff members are effectively utilizing ICT tools for teaching and learning prcess in  all the subjects of UG and PG programmes.
  • The availability of Maps, Encyclopedias and Journals are the value addition to the library.
  • Wi-Fi enabled internet facility is effectively serving the need of the faculty and students.
  • This institution was started with the primary objective of providing higher education to the children of socially and economically weaker section. This department adhered to this objective and ensured quality education to poor children .
  • The Board of studies of the department periodically held to redesign the curriculum/syllabi to cater to the need of the changing trends in industry and higher education.
  • Encouraging the students and faculties Participation in seminars, workshops and conferences.
  • Effective teaching-learning process designed with  practical orientation.
  • Special care given to weaker students through remedical & tutorial classes.

FUTURE PLANS:

  • Promoting research in the department.
  • Conducting National and International level seminars, conferences and workshops with funding from different funding agencies.
  • Preparing students for facing NET/SET/UPSC/TNPSC examinations by conducting coaching classes.
  • Conducting life skill development programs regularly after the class hours.
  • Identifying various projects and exploring the funding provisions for research students.
  • To prepare e-materials and audio-visual package on subjects which have very limited learning materials available row.
  • To conduct certificate courses on Tourism and Journalism, which will enhance the employment opportunity to the students of history.
  • To train the students to hunt for jobs by providing job oriented courses and guidance’s.
  • A Museum of History was established to raise the  awareness lack of students on Historicity of antiques.
  • Heritage centre to be opened in the college campus.
  • It is proposed to start the B.A. History with Tourism course in the upcoming year.
  • Proposed to have Competitive examinations coaching center for social science students.
