About the Department

The establishment of Department of commerce in the year 1983 with 51 students was an important milestone in the history of Kunthavai Naacchiyaar Government Arts College for Women (Autonomous), Thanjavur. Due to increased demand for B.Com seats a self-finance section was started in the year 1993. As the demand for B.Com seats was still unabated with a receipt of more than 1000 applications every year, a new B.Com course under Special Shift System was started in the year 2006 as per Government instructions. The M.Com degree course, introduced in the year 2004 – 2005, was a boon to many of our students in pursuance of higher education. The department was upgraded into a Research Department by the Bharadhidasan University. 48 students have completed Master of Philosophy in Commerce and 14 students have completed their Doctoral Degree in Commerce contributing towards Research and Development. Beginning with two staff members and 51 students, the department is now the strongest department of the college with 602 students and 16 staff members. The intake of department in a year is 182 students in the UG stream and 30 students in the Post Graduate stream. The autonomous status conferred upon the college in the year 2004-2005 paved way for modification of the course pattern.
To provide flexibility and wider choice for students CBCS pattern was adopted in the year 2005-2006. Added to this the curriculum had scope for earning extra credits through Self Study/MOOCs courses. The Naan Mudhalvan Scheme introduced during the year 2023 paved way for enhancing the Communication, Technological and subject specific skills through introduction of Mandatory Skill Enhancement Courses in the curriculum. Social relevance, environmental sustainability and employability are the factors upon which the curriculum is built. There is enough scope for specialization and diversification in the curriculum offered and the students are to choose according to their aptitude and taste.
A dedicated band of 4 Associate Professors and 1 Assistant Professor under the regular stream, 3 Assistant Professors on deputation from Annamalai University and 8 Guest Lecturers under the consolidated payment stream act as knowledge builders and motivators of the department. 15 of them hold a Doctorate degree in Commerce. ---- of them have cleared the National/State Level Educational Testing for Lectureship. Our department staff members have actively engaged themselves in various key roles of the college. The EDC & Placement cell of the college is managed by the Faculty of commerce since it’s inception. Teaching, learning and evaluation are systematically planned through the instruments of the semester plans, lesson plans and Continuous Internal Assessment. Seminars and Assignments are part of the Continuous Internal Assessment System.
