About the Department:

The Department of Geography was established in 1972, offering B.Sc. and M.Sc. Geography programs. The B.Sc. program was commenced in 1972-73, while the M.Sc. program was started in 2004-2005. Over the years, the department has produced more than 2000 graduates and about 300 postgraduates. Recently, the department celebrated its 50th anniversary during 2022-2023. Throughout the pandemic, our department successfully adapted to the new normal by implementing online classes, which were readily embraced by our students. We regularly organize seminars and workshops on topics relevant to geography, geostatistics, and geospatial technology. Our students actively engage in social service and volunteer for NSS, YRC, Red Ribbon Club, and Green Club. There are 7 classrooms expanding with an area of 4366 ft2 and 1 lab with an area of 668 ft2 available in the department. Equipped with traditional and modern survey instruments, our department boasts a collection of 1522 books, together with resources such as toposheets, weather maps, NATMO atlas, Census Atlas, and Resource Atlas for both undergraduate and postgraduate practicals. Our students receive comprehensive training in digital mapping and surveying using open-source software and digital survey instruments, including GNSS receivers.

Vision: To provide quality higher education to economically and socially deprived students, especially from rural areas, by enlightening their future with geographical knowledge and geospatial technology.

Mission:

• To ignite the young minds with lofty ideals and inspire them to achieve excellence in geography

• To assist character based individual growth of students through co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
• To motivate the students for competitive examinations at state and national levels.
• To provide a congenial atmosphere for learning geo-spatial technology and its applications.

Objectives and Goals: 

• To transition into a leading research department in the field of geography
• To establish a state-of-the-art geoinformatics lab equipped with the latest technology and software
• To procure modern survey instruments
• To create an e-library with a comprehensive collection of digital resources, including journals, books, and research papers
• To offer consultancy services in the field of surveying and digital mapping
• To increase the employability level

Key Initiatives and Projects:

• TANSCHE Minor Project was sanctioned for the year 2022-2023 to the tune of Rs.1,00,000/- under the supervision of Dr. S. Sreekala, Associate Professor.
• TNSCST Student Project was approved to Ms. P. Sangeetha, II M.Sc., Geography student for the academic year 2021-2022 for an amount of Rs.7,500/- under the guidship of Dr. K. Banukumar, Head of the Department.
• 140 students have participated in ISRO-IIRS Distance Learning Programme.
• PG students are taking up SWAYAM-NPTEL courses regularly.

Collaborations and Partnerships:

• Collaborated with Department of Aeronautics, Periyar Maniyammai Institute of Science and Technology, Thanjavur for internship programme. 
• An MoU has been signed with Scanpoint Geomatics Private Ltd, Ahmedabad, Gujarat for Industrial collaboration.

Performance Metrics:

• The average UG results for the past 5 years stand at 96% whereas the same for PG stands  at 93%.
• Ms. Shalini and Ms. Varsha of II M.Sc., Geography students have respectively secured second and third   prizes in the Talent Test 2024, conducted by Indian Geographical Society (IGS), Chennai.
• The following UG and PG students have secured University Ranks during the last 5 years

 

Resources and Infrastructure:

• 1400 books on various titles related to Geography.
• Journals such as Transactions from Institute of Indian Geographers, Pune, Journal of Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, Indian Geographical Journal from Indian Geographical Society, Chennai
• 2 Overhead projectors for ICT enabled classes.
• 5 computers equipped with basic and advanced Free and Open Source GIS softwares
• Basic survey instruments like chain, plane table, prismatic compass, Dumpy Level and Abney Level.
• Toposheets, Resource Atlas, NATMO Atlas, Census Atlas, Weather Maps
• Soil Moisture estimation device
• Modern survey instrument like EDM,  hand-held GPS and Total Station

Future Plans and Directions:

• To become a research department
• To establish Geospatial Laboratory for Post Graduate Level
• To conduct workshop/seminar/conference every semester.
• To establish an automated weather station
• To offer consultancy services to the local community
• To provide entrepreneurship training to the students

Best Practice

• Final year UG and PG students are participating in the Talent Test conducted by IGS, Chennai
• Final year UG and All PG students are participating in the ISRO-IIRS Distance Learning Programme
