1966 ஆம் ஆண்டு அரசினர் மகளிர் கலைக்கல்லூரி என்ற பெயரில் தொடங்கப்பட்ட எம்கல்லூரியில் 1969 முதல் பட்டவகுப்புகள் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டு 1984ம் ஆண்டு இராஜராஜசோழனின் 1000 ஆம் ஆண்டு முடிசூட்டு விழாவினைக் கொண்டாடிய தமிழக அரசு குந்தவை நாச்சியார் அரசினர் மகளிர் கலைக்கல்லூரி எனப்பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்து ஆணைபிறப்பித்தது. 1982ம் ஆண்டு பாரதிதாசன் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் இணைவு பெற்ற கல்லூரியாக மாற்றம் பெற்ற இக்கல்லூரியில், கல்லூரி தொடங்கப்பட்ட நாள் முதல் சிறப்பாக செயல்பட்டு வந்த தமிழ்த்துறையில் 1990-1991ம் ஆண்டு இளையர் பட்டவகுப்புகளும், 2005-2006ம்  ஆண்டு முதுநிலை பட்டவகுப்புகளும், 2011-2012ம் ஆண்டில் முனைவர் பட்ட ஆய்வுத்துறையாகவும் தமிழ்த்துறை படிநிலைகளான ஏற்றங்களைப்பெற்று சீரியமுறையில் நல்வளர்ச்சி பெற்றுவருகின்றது. எம்துறைபேராசிரியர்களாக உள்ள அனைவருமே முனைவர் பட்டம் பெற்றவர்கள் .
          தமிழ்த்துறைப் பேராசிரியர் தன்னார்வத்துடன்,சுயநிதியுடன் பயிலரங்கம்  2013ல்  வெற்றியுடன் நடத்தினர். மேலும் கல்லூரியின் தன்னாட்சிநிதி, செம்மொழி தமிழாய்வு நிறுவனம் நல்கியநிதிஉதவி, பல்கலைக்கழக மானியக்குழுவின் நிதிஉதவிகளைப்பெற்று 2014, 2015, 2017,2020,2021,2023 ஆகிய ஆண்டுகளில் தேசியமற்றும்,பன்னாட்டுக் கருத்தரங்கங்கள்,பயிலரங்குகள்,மாணவிகள் பயனுறும் வண்ணம் துறைபோகிய தமிழறிஞர்களைக் கொண்டு நிகழ்த்தப்பெற்றன.  RUSA வழங்கியநிதி உதவியுடன் தமிழ்மொழி ஆய்வுக்கூடம்  2018ல் தொடங்கப்பட்டு மாணவிகளுக்கு மொழி ஆய்வுப்பயிற்சி வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றது. சிந்தனையியல், மகளிரியல் தஞ்சை மாவட்டப்பெண் போராளிகள், தமிழ்நாட்டுப்பெண் சாதனையாளர்கள், தஞ்சைமாவட்ட  தமிழ்ச்சான்றோர்கள், பாரதியின் படைப்புகளில் பன்முக ஆளுமை, போன்ற நூல்கள் தமிழ்த்துறையின் சீரியமுயற்சியின் விளைவாக வெளிவந்த பெருமைக்குரியது. இவையேயன்றி, கல்லூரியின் பொதுப்பணிகளான, மகளிர்ஆயம், நுகர்வோர்மன்றம், நாட்டுநலப்பணித்திட்டம், செஞ்சிலுவைசங்கம், செஞ்சுருள்சங்கம், சமூகசேவைக்குழு, மாணவர்பேரவை,நுண்கலைமன்றம்,தேசிய ஒருமைப்பாட்டு சமீதி,முன்னாள் மாணவர் சங்கபொறுப்பாளர்கள், கேலிவதைத்தடுப்புக்குழு, மாணவர் மனக்குறை மன்றம் ,புதுமைப்பெண்திட்ட ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர், ,பொலிவுறு குந்தவை, விடுதிமாணவர் சேர்க்கைகுழுஉறுப்பினர், விடுதிக்காப்பாளர், கல்விசாராப்போட்டிகள், போன்றவற்றிலும் எம்துறைப்பேராசிரியர்கள் செவ்வனே செயல்பட்டு வரும் பெருமைக்குரியவர்கள்.
          எம்துறையின் உயராய்வுமையத்தின் வழி 14 பேராசிரியர்கள் முனைவர்ப்பட்ட நெறியாளர்களாகயுள்ளனர்.அவர்களின் வழிகாட்டுதலின் பேரில் இதுவரை 50 மாணவிகள் முனைவர் பட்டத்திற்கு பதிவுசெய்து 30 ஆய்வாளர்கள் முனைவர் பட்டம் பெற்றுள்ளனர் என்பது பெருமைக்குரியது.      

1. About the Department:

In 1966, the Tamil Nadu government renamed the "Kunthavai Naachiyaar Government Arts College for Women" in Thanjavur, which began its first batch of courses in 1969. Since its inception, the college has been actively involved in Tamil studies, starting from 1990 with undergraduate courses, followed by postgraduate courses in 2005, and in 2013, it became a research institution under the guidance of the Research Director. In 2013, the department successfully conducted a workshop in collaboration with the Self-Study Unit, achieving great success.
Additionally, Various national and state-level seminars and workshops for students have been organized by the department through collaboration & financial assistance, benefiting Tamil scholars from across Tamil Nadu.
Through various activities such as the Women's Welfare Association, Literary Society, Social Service Group, Student Council, Youth Red Cross, NSS, Tamil Mandram, Students' Union, Educational Development Forum, Student Welfare Board, and Student Counselling Cell, professors of Tamil studies have actively contributed to the college's success.

Mission:
Our mission is to become a dynamic hub for language studies, conducting innovative research across various disciplines. We strive to create state-of-the-art infrastructure to support our research endeavours.

Objectives and Goals:

Objectives:

• Teach Tamil literature from the Sangam period to the Modern age.
• Provide comprehensive instruction in Tamil grammar.
• Offer courses on Feminism and Human Rights to promote social consciousness.
• Enhance students' employability.
• Develop general knowledge and creativity.
• Provide training in translation, education, interpretation, and linguistic expression.

Goals:

• Foster proficiency in Tamil among students through activities like verse and short story writing, drama, and descriptive writing.
• Cultivate an appreciation for Tamil literature and grammar, emphasizing their cultural significance.

Key Initiatives and Projects:

• One-day Training Workshop Conducted on the topic, “Tamil Culture in Keezhadi Archaeological Excavation” for Graduates and Post Graduates.
• International Seminar conducted on “Multifaceted Personality in Bharathi’s Works” for doctoral students.
• International Seminar conducted on “Tamil Illakkiyankali Puthiya Theydalkal Works” for doctoral students.
• KanithamilPeravai conducted on “Tamil Menporul- seyalikalum Payanpadum Works” Graduates and Post Graduates .

Collaborations and Partnerships:

• The department has a MOU with Foreign Tamil Education Department, Scientific Tamil Department, Rare Handwritten Manuscript Department and Folklore Studies Department of the Tamil University, Thanjavur, benefiting the Students for various collaborative projects & research works
• The department received Financial Support from Central Institute for Classical Tamil
• RUSA provided financial support for language training in the year 2018.

Performance Metrics:

• The department has guided 54 students to apply as doctoral candidates & 30 of the Research Scholars pursuing Ph.D., have successfully obtained their doctoral degrees.
• Three of our Doctoral Candidates have successfully cleared the NET exam in the latest academic year.

Resources and Infrastructure:

• Tamil Computer association was inaugurated in the year 2022-2023, to emphasize the need of Computer training for students of Tamil Literature.
• 6200 books on varied subjects if Tamil literature enabling adequate resources for learning & education
• Technologically equipped Language lab, established in the year 2018, facilitates advanced learning of Post Graduates and Research Scholars.

Future Plans and Directions:

• Multilingual Centre for doing research in Languages.
• Fine arts Centre with focusing Folk Arts
• To publish in house journal and e-journal
• Preparation and publication of Standards for digitalization.
• Introduction of Research program in Tamil & Computer based Tamil Literature.

• Actively engaging in diverse workshops organized by Tamil Associations across the state and universities.
• Leveraging technology for language studies to enhance learning and accessibility.
• Hosting seminars and workshops on pertinent topics aligned with current trends to foster the training and development of students within the Tamil department.
• Organises ‘Nool Nayam’, a monthly book club for UG and PG students to present and discuss their book reviews.
