History
The Department of Statistics is the newly created in Kunthavai Naacchiyaar Government Arts College for Women (Autonomous) Allied Statistics course was started in the year 1972-1973. The statistics U.G Course started in 2004 with 15 students . PG Course started at 2018 now it is developed with 120 major students and 8 staff members.
The mission of the Department is to provide an opportunity for students to enhance their ability to apply statistics in a wide range of fields of application. The vision of the Department is to produce committed, competent, efficient and professionally capable under graduates in the fields of statistics such as Product Testing, Sample Surveys, and Clinical Trials in Medicine, Nursing, Bio-Statistics, Environmental Studies, Consulting, Econometrics, Information Technologies, Education, Business, Commerce, Economics, Management, Social Sciences and Engineering for research and extension. The Department is interacting with industrial and field area.

- To acquaint students with various statistical methods and their application in different fields.
- Developing skills in handling problems in data analysis and research design.
- To prepare students for present competitive world.
Mission:
- Bringing awareness about effective use of Statistics for social concern through a statistical association.
- Spreading knowledge of Statistics and its applications in various fields through conducting workshops / presentations / Seminars /Guest Lectures / Field visits.
- Department empower students with life-oriented education through real life projects of current and social interest.
- To give recognition towards statistical methodologies.
- To bring awareness about the importance of statistics among students.
- To make students aware of the practical applications.
Objectives and goals
- The type and quantity of data need to be collected. Organizing and summarizing the data. Analyzing the data and drawing conclusions from it.
- A statistical research project is to investigate causality, and in particular to draw a conclusion on the effect of changes in the values of predictors or independent variables on dependent variables.
- To motivate students to take part competitive exam and to enhance their placement.
- To circulate entrepreneurial, employability skills and team spirit.
- Career Opportunities of the M.Sc. Statistics programme Central Government Departments like Indian Statistical Service (ISS), IAS, IPS, IFS, Class-I Services, Statistical Officer at various levels in Central Statistical Organization (CSO), Statistical Officer at various levels in National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO), Assistant Director of Statistics (Planning Commission), Insurance Companies (Vital Statistics) and StatisticalInvestigator.
- State Government Departments like Assistant Director of Statistics, District Statistical Officer, Assistant Statistical Investigator, Statistical Inspector, Statistical Assistant and Block Development Statistical Investigator.
- Public and Private Sector / Industries / Organizations / Bank Sector like Statistical Officer, Statistical Analyst, Statistical Assistant and Statistical Quality Control Officer, Quality Controller.
- Teaching and Research like [after finishing Ph.D. in Statistics or National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Eligibility Test (SET) or State Level Eligibility Test (SLET)] Assistant Professor, Lecturer, Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) and Research Associate (RA)
Key initiatives and Projects
- Analysis of crime statistics in your local area.
- Comparison of average income and spending habits of people in different age groups.
- Analysis of social media usage statistics across different demographics.
- Supporting the work of sectorial organisations such as ILO with the implementation of Labor Market Information Systems with Stat at the core, facilitating for the dissemination of Labor Market statistics via SDMX Web Services, and with the potential for countries to expand to other domains.
- Supporting technology driven innovation in the statistical domain as exemplified with the Statsbot initiative, driven by Statistics Canada and CBS NL, with the participation of several Community members.
Collaborations and partnerships
This Memorandum of Understanding has been made on this day 04-10-2023 between Department of Statistics, Kunthavai Naacchiyar Government Arts College for Women, (Autonomous) Thanjavur ( here in after referred as the parthy-1) and TAF IAS Academy, Thanjavur(here in after referred to as the Party-2) . According to the Memorandum of understanding the institution-I and the institution-2 have agreed for mutual collaboration.
